Sergeant (kersantti in Finnish) is a Swedish and Finnish military rank above korpral in Sweden and alikersantti in Finland; and below förste sergeant in Sweden and Ylikersantti in Finland.

In Finnish army after two months basic training some of conscripts are selected for a two-stage NCO -course with a rank of NCO -student (AUK1 and AUK2), of which after stage 1 (AUK1) few are sent to Reserve Officer School and the rest continue in NCO -course stage 2 (AUK2), after which they are promoted to rank of Alikersantti/corporal and are appointed squad leaders for new conscripts for six months, usually one top alikersantti from each platoon is promoted to sergeant few weeks before discharge, and in meantime act as deputy platoon commander as well as squad leader.
Like any other rank up to Major/Lieutenant Commander, the rank of sergeant can be achieved in reserve if certain requirements are met.
